Context
Active transport, also known as active travel, refers to transport methods including walking, cycling and the use of other non-motorised vehicles such as skateboards, kick scooters, roller skates and roller blades.
Active travel offers the two-fold benefit of increasing mental and physical health while reducing motorised transport’s impact on the environment. However, there are several challenges to consider: availability of safe and accessible walking and cycling options, lack of time and motivation, and gaps in transport infrastructure that make it impractical to walk, ride, or use public transport.
In this context, this design research project was initiated to investigate how foreign residents of Brisbane make decisions on transport methods and to gain in-depth insights into the challenges they face that block them from choosing more active transport modes.
